Passport Renewal procedure for minors is the same as getting a new passport. This is an extra security feature until your child turns 16.

Use this procedure if:

  • Your child is under 16 years of age
  • Your child had a previous US Passport before
  • You have the expired/expiring original passport (if you do not have original passport, follow Lost Passport- Minors procedure)

STEP 1. GATHER THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS

  • Original US birth certificate with both parents' names on it, must be issued by the state, NOT the hospital

  • Original expired/expiring passport

  • Two passport photos (must be taken within last 2-3 months), no glasses. Can be taken at the post office.

  • Copies of both parents' valid in-state driver's licenses (front & back)- originals will be shown to the post office clerk

  • Copy of itinerary showing international flights (must include the child's & at least one parent's name)- if you don't have an itinerary, please email us at cs@ivsdc.com

  • One Application DS-11 (fill out online)- this form must be filled out online. All hand-written applications will be suspended

  • One letter of authorization (click here to download)- both parents must sign this form and put (mother) and (father) next to their signatures. This form must be included inside your sealed envelope. If not, your paperwork will be suspended and it will take considerably longer to process your passport

  • Personal check or money order made out to "US DEPARTMENT OF STATE". If you are applying for passport book only, amount should be $160. If you are applying for passport book AND passport card, amount should be $175.

  • Application DS-3053 (click here to download)- this form is only needed IF one of the parents cannot go to the post office. The non-appearing parent must fill out and notarize this form and provide a copy of the driver's license (front & back) that was used for notarization. The non-appearing parent will NOT need to sign the letter of authorization.

STEP 2. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND VISIT YOUR LOCAL POST OFFICE

  • Both parents AND the child must be present at the post office. If one of the parents cannot appear, a notarized form DS-3035 must be included (see instructions above)
  • You will need to visit your local post office that can handle HAND CARRY PROCEDURES. CLICK HERE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. Appointments are required at most post offices due to Covid restrictions
  • Make sure to bring all documents listed in STEP 1 with you. Photos can be taken at the post office. Tell post office clerk that you need to do a hand carry procedure.
  • A special post office clerk will to witness parents' signatures and seal all of your child's documents in one envelope. You MUST ensure that letter of authorization AND itinerary are included INSIDE sealed envelope. If not, your paperwork will be suspended and it will take much longer to finish processing of your passport.
